Our Tournament

Welcome to the Lee Carlyle Memorial Tournament

About the Tournament

The Lee Carlyle Memorial Tournament is hosted by the Edmonton Masters Lacrosse League, and we want to be clear about what this event represents. This is a Masters tournament — created to showcase Masters lacrosse in Edmonton, throughout Alberta, and eventually, one day, across the country.

Our goal is to create an event where:

  • Masters players from Edmonton, across Alberta, and from other provinces can connect

  • We celebrate and elevate Masters lacrosse on a national scale

  • Players come together to compete, reconnect, and build community

  • We strengthen and grow the Masters game by playing in a fun, meaningful, and competitive tournament environment

This tournament is an opportunity to bring the Masters community together — not just to play, but to share the sport we love in a way that reflects the spirit, camaraderie, and legacy of Masters lacrosse.

If you have any questions about the tournament, or if there’s anything we haven’t covered here, please don’t hesitate to reach out. We’re more than happy to help.

Why This Tournament Matters

The Lee Carlyle Memorial Tournament isn’t just a weekend of games — it’s a celebration of what Masters lacrosse represents.

Community. Connection. Legacy.

This event brings together players from Edmonton, across Alberta, and beyond to share the floor, reconnect with old teammates, and welcome new faces into the Masters family. It’s a chance to compete hard, laugh often, and enjoy the game in the way only Masters players can.

It also honours the people who shaped our league — especially Lee Carlyle, whose dedication, humour, and love for the sport helped build the foundation we play on today.

We gather each year not only to play lacrosse, but to strengthen the Masters community, celebrate its spirit, and carry forward the legacy of those who made it what it is.

Honouring Lee Carlyle

Today (January 27, 2024), many of us had a chance to say goodbye to Lee at his celebration of life.

How to put in words what Lee has meant to our league over the years truly cannot be expressed.

Lee has been a part of our league since its inception, and his impact on our league will be immense and long-standing.

Lee was a regular Sunday night ref. Over the years we have seen him take the time to visit teams after the games in the locker room, or wait in the parking lot to share stories and laughs. We have also seen him tell a few of you to shut up and serve your penalty — generally followed by “we can talk after the game.” We have seen him coach new players, explain calls, and help players understand how to avoid penalties in the future.

One thing many people in our league may not know is that the rules we play with today exist in large part because of Lee.

He spent countless hours of his own time reaching out to Masters leagues across Canada, and sitting down with our executive to help shape the rules we use today. He took his years of reffing us and worked to give us the game we want, while ensuring the safety of our players.

Even after retiring from being our ref, you could find him in the stands on Sunday nights or in the parking lot after to see how we were all doing. He continued to be a staple within our league.

Our executive wanted to honour the legacy of Lee within our league. With that, we are proud to share that our 2024 executive has chosen to rename our Spring Fling Tournament.

As of 2024, our tournament will be named the:

Lee Carlyle Memorial Tournament

Thank you so much for your time with us, Lee. You will be truly missed.
